Verduurzaming warmte & elektriciteitsproductie Bergen op Zoom
JTF
Project overview
This project aims to define a permittable, economically, and infrastructurally feasible solution for the decarbonization of utilities at the Callandweg site in Bergen op Zoom. At the same time, it advances Iron Fuel Technology™ for industrial application, ensuring economic activity and employment transition towards sustainable industries.

From concept to reality: outcomes
This project will design, build, and commission a 2MW Iron Fuel Boiler demonstration system, followed by six months of endurance testing to refine the technology from TRL6 to TRL9.
RIFT and Ennatuurlijk will gain hands-on experience in operating and maintaining the system, while also exploring electrification options (1-3MW). The final energy setup will combine Iron Fuel (2-4MW) and electrification, cutting CO₂ emissions by 99.9% and allowing for up to 9,000 MWh of extra heat and power production per year.
The project will also lay the groundwork for scaling Iron Fuel Technology, with a focus on the chemical industry (30.2MW in potential customers), RIFT’s regeneration plant in a key port, and Ennatuurlijk’s future networks.
How we make it happen: activities
• Knowledge sharing & promotion Spread awareness, share insights, and engage stakeholders through events and documentation
• Pilot plan development Define technical and operational requirements for scaling up to a 2-4MW pilot system
• Demo system design Engineer a scalable 2MW Iron Fuel boiler with safety, efficiency, and feasibility in mind
• Demo system construction Procure, build, and commission the 2MW demonstration system
• Demonstration system testing Conduct tests, analyze results, and refine the system based on pilot KPIs
• Roll-out strategy Finalize the pilot plan and define the roadmap for broader industrial implementation
