SLAGLESS aims to tackle one of the key challenges in the development of Iron Fuel Technology: slagging. The project focuses on understanding, preventing and reducing material build-up during combustion, with the goal of improving the efficiency and availability of Iron Fuel Boilers for industrial applications.

SLAGLESS  (Sustainable Low-AGglomeration iron combustion for Lab to pilot Energy System Scaling) investigates the mechanisms behind slagging in Iron Fuel combustion and develops solutions to prevent and reduce material build-up in boiler systems. The project combines laboratory research, numerical modelling and burner development, bringing together TU/e, RIFT and Avans. 

The developed solutions will be tested progressively from laboratory and prototype scale to RIFT’s existing 1 MW pilot installation in Helmond. The project also explores opportunities to reuse agglomerated powder removed from the boiler, supporting a more efficient and circular approach to Iron Fuel combustion.

Expected

impact.

SLAGLESS will contribute to more efficient and reliable Iron Fuel boiler systems by reducing slagging-related performance losses and downtime. The validation of the developed solutions at pilot scale is intended to support the transition of Iron Fuel Technology towards commercial industrial applications.
