Next step in Bergen op Zoom

This project develops and demonstrates a 2 MW Iron Fuel boiler at the Ennatuurlijk site in Bergen op Zoom. By combining real-world validation with system integration, electrification studies and pilot engineering, the project prepares Iron Fuel Technology for commercial deployment in industrial heat and district heating.

From concept to reality: outcomes

The project will design, build, and commission a 2 MW Iron Fuel Boiler demonstration system, followed by six months of endurance testing to bring the technology from TRL 6 to TRL 9.

RIFT and Ennatuurlijk will gain operational experience in running and maintaining the system, while also exploring electrification options (1–3 MW). The final energy setup will combine Iron Fuel (2–4 MW) with electrification, achieving a 99.9% reduction in CO₂ emissions and enabling up to 9,000 MWh of additional heat and power production annually.

The results will also set the stage for scaling Iron Fuel Technology to new markets, including:

  • The chemical industry (30.2 MW of potential customers)
  • RIFT’s regeneration plant in a major port location
  • Future networks operated by Ennatuurlijk
