OpZuid: Living lab

Iron Fuel Technology™ Reaches TRL 8
Alongside technical performance, the project ensures compliance with regulations, reliable supply, certification, financing, insurance conditions, and strong public support. These steps lay the groundwork for commercial market introduction.
Project progress
Fuel to future: from lab to market
The project’s goal is to prove Iron Fuel Technology’s readiness for industrial use, showing it can deliver sustainable heat at scale. By building a collaborative “living lab” with industry, academia, and value chain partners, the project connects every link needed for a successful rollout.
Once completed, the technology will be validated against the commercial requirements of end-users, insurers, certification bodies, and financiers. This milestone paves the way for moving from pilot agreements to commercial projects of 5 MW to 20 MW. The result: enabling energy-intensive industries without sustainable alternatives to reduce CO₂ and NOx emissions in line with climate targets.
Catalyzing change: expected outcomes
Systems
Design and build a 1 MW iron fuel boiler and a 200 kW iron fuel production system that meet end-user and value chain requirements.
Community
Create a learning community to develop the skills and competencies needed for commercial rollout, and share project knowledge widely.
Technology
Validate the technology’s performance, safe storage, and clean transport in collaboration with insurers, certification bodies, financiers, and end-users.
Public support
Increase societal acceptance and awareness of Iron Fuel Technology™, building the foundation for successful market adoption.
