Waste hydrogen reduction.
RE(W)HIRE is a Eurostars project in which RIFT and Evonik Antwerpen collaborate to develop a new iron oxide reduction process using contaminated hydrogen generated as an industrial by-product. The project combines hydrogen purification, reactor development and process integration to demonstrate that renewable Iron Fuel can be produced sustainably and cost-effectively using waste hydrogen streams.

Iron Fuel Production currently relies on high-purity hydrogen. At the same time, industrial facilities such as Evonik Antwerpen generate hydrogen-rich by-product streams that remain underutilised due to impurities. Unlocking these streams requires new reduction processes that can operate reliably with contaminated hydrogen while maintaining Iron Fuel quality.
RIFT and Evonik Antwerpen are developing and validating a new reduction process that enables the use of industrial by-product hydrogen for Iron Fuel production. The project combines hydrogen purification, reactor adaptations and experimental validation to demonstrate a technically and economically viable alternative to conventional hydrogen supply.
Expected
impact.
By enabling the reuse of industrial by-product hydrogen, RE(W)HIRE can reduce hydrogen waste, lower production costs and expand the opportunities for commercial Iron Fuel Production across industrial sites with available hydrogen streams.
